See the previous post for 50/50 draw. So this had to be the closest games we have seen in the modern age of the BMTFL. Leatherheads won a really tight finish against the new Sharks team for 2025. The game came down to double OT to decide who went to the Championship game. Meanwhile, at Commonwealth, the rebuilding Dutchmen put in a final push and scored with only a few plays left to take the lead and win over the season long unbeaten Gabriel Pizza team. Then the crowds started to arrive on a sunny, then cloudy, then gradual sun again day at Commonwealth. The B Championship had a matchup of the 2023 Champions Snap Fitness team, now McArthur’s Barbershop compete against the 2024 champion Miracle Maid Maniacs. What could be better. Well….it was a good game and it was McArthur’s putting in the last ditch effort to score late and make the outcome tense but the Maids kept the lead to win the B trophy. Congrats to the Miracle Maid Maniacs. Then we proceeded to the Championship ship game right after we received pizza at the field from Gabriel Pizza. Hot and fresh! Leatherheads the bridesmaids in the previous years took the Championship trophy from the veteran Dutchmen. It was a great game. Lots of action on the field and on the sidelines. But Leatherheads stayed strong and now claim the 2025, BMTFL trophy with Tanner Dejong as QB and the insanely talented super long term BMTFL player from the 1980s, Dale Dejong. At the awards banquet, we thanked Great Canadian SuperStore, M&M meats and our own Pierce Lapensee for the donation to the BBQ that raised almost 800$. Huge thanks to Dan Thompson and the great staff at the Keystorm Pub, that for some reason keep letting us come back for about 20 years. Can’t imagine the Banquet any where else! Gabriel Pizza(Restaurant, not team) was spot on with the pizzas delivered to the field. And thanks to Troy Wilson for the Porta-Potties again this year. That really helps. Now for awards. Offensive player award went to Wade Zanchetta with 10 TDs and extra points to finish with 63 points. Defensive award was split to recognize the impact these players had. Jacob White was Interception award with 12 interceptions in 7 games, 5 more than the next player. The rusher of the year went to our Sack leader, Chris (Flash) Cook with 18 sacks over 7 games. QB of the year was carried by Tanner Dejong with 23 TDs, 2 INTs and 2 sacks. Rookie Offense went to Zach Burnside with 26 points and Rookie Defense was Roberto Noonan with 7 sacks. The Age-less Johnny Mac award went to the Mother’s snapper, Ian Spear. Then the Snapper mug award went to the young Jack Wilson. Then the excitement started to build as the Mother’s ran their rigged awards again this year and voted Jacob White as president. The Golden Boot went to Devin VanBlitterswyk as a Rookie and the up and coming Andrew Evans won the Golden slipper as Rookie of the year. The 50/50 draw was held next with some winners still to appear. 1 week to claim prizes. Estimate for the charity is 400$ to the Kinsmen Snowsuit fund and 1600$ to the Harvest Sharing, and hoping to have a local company match to make the donation 3200$. The final award was saved to the end and with a quiet crowd, the winner of the Micah Sportsmanship award went to a long term player that sets the example for the league. Never snaps at his team, always accepts the ref decisions, always congratulates the opposing team, plays with everyone on the team. Leigh Howard wins this Sportsmanship award in 2025 and claims it was his last season, but the crowd quickly started a chant that I can still hear…..ONE MORE YEAR…..ONE MORE YEAR….ONE MORE YEAR…… So we closed out the season with a great meal and some beer at the Keystorm. Game photos and Banquet photos to be uploaded soon. Fantastic year. Happy 50th everyone and thanks for all the fun.
